The resort's developer, struck by the soft, light-colored sand along the ocean, bestowed the name. (Hardly anyone uses the beach's Hawaiian name anymore.) Insider tip: Cook-at-home guests can travel three-quarters of a mile south three times a week to where the Farmers Market of Maui sells locally grown produce, local cheeses, freshly baked banana bread, and other treats at a shaded roadside stand.
Tranquil 216-room Sugar Beach Resort offers sweeping views of the ocean from lanais. Set up for casual, comfortable living, air-conditioned rooms are furnished island-style, with light-colored furniture and colorful fabrics.
