Hotel Hana Maui
Hotel Information: Opened in 1947, this 66-acre coastal resort was fully renovated in 2002. Isolated on the eastern side of Maui's Haleakala mountain, it's accessed by a three-hour drive on a winding, two-lane coast highway, with one-lane bridges over waterfalls. The hotel is set in a working ranch, and horses graze on a bluff overlooking Hana Bay. Honeymooners, eco-adventurers, and vacationing businesspeople come for Hawaiian history, culture, and entertainment, and the many on-site recreational and spa services.
Insider tip: By starting the day on the remote southeast coast, hotel guests can beat west-coast tourist traffic to attractions such as Blue Pool; Pi'ilanihale Heiau; Wai'anapanapa State Park; and nearby white-, black-, and red-sand beaches. Hana and surrounding areas can be seen from a mountaintop memorial to Hana Ranch founder Paul Fagan; the front desk has keys.
This 66-acre, Hana, Hawaii resort features 66 guestrooms, all of which have one king bed or two queen beds with down mattress pads and 300-thread-count organic-cotton sheets. Ceiling fans, screened sliding doors to lanais, and opening windows with adjustable shutters for privacy allow each room to be cooled by ocean breezes. Colorful comforters and curtains are adorned with traditional 18th- and 19th-century kapa (Hawaiian bark art) patterns. Hardwood floors are covered with woven pandanus mats.
Hotel Hana Maui’s teak room furnishings use wood recycled from Chinese oxcarts, and light sconces are made from coconuts. Lanais are furnished with a table and chairs, and lounge chairs. All rooms have wet bars with mini-refrigerators and complimentary beverages (fresh Hana coffee, herbal teas, bottled water, and sodas are replenished daily). Bathrooms have a second telephone, walk-in showers, separate soaking tubs, organic-cotton towels, made-in-Maui toiletries, magnifying make-up mirrors, bathrobes, and slippers. Each closet has a safe, padded hangers, an ironing board with iron, bug repellent, and umbrellas.
